What Kind of Spills Does Pro-Enviro Clean Up?

We respond to all spill clean-up jobs, large or small and no matter what type of spill it is. For example, we can help automotive shops clean up diesel or oil spills in the shop, assist transport companies if their truck has dumped hazardous cargo while on route, and clean up spills in your shipping yard from a leaky parked vehicle.

Our team of technicians and equipment operators understand the importance of fast, thorough and compliant spill clean-up. Here are some types of spills we can help you with:

  • Vehicle fuel spills (diesel, gasoline, etc.)
  • Oil spills (motor oil, lubricants, waste oil)
  • Vehicle fluid spills (coolant, hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid, brake fluid)
  • Hazardous materials (accidents, fires, bio-hazardous material)
  • Non-hazardous materials (cargo spills, food products, debris)
  • Chemical spills (solvents, corrosive, industrial chemical spills)
  • Cargo spills (recovery of spilled and lost transport cargo)

Because spills pose a significant threat to the environment, we do all we can to contain them before they contaminate more of the area. For example, protecting storm drains from diesel, gasoline, oil, and other hazardous spills is a top priority. If contaminants get in there, they can enter our local waterways and harm wildlife and ecosystems. Storm drain cleaning can also be expensive, so we must keep as much of the spill out of that drain as possible!

If you’re involved in a spill, major or minor, call Pro-Enviro. We’ll make sure it’s contained, cleaned and restored.

What is the Spill Recovery Process?

When an accident happens, stress levels can run high. Even minor spills can feel like a painful hassle, and you might not know what to do. Plus, there are some legal requirements for spill cleanup and recovery. No worries. We understand the situation and will give you peace of mind knowing it is all taken care of and compliant with local legislation.

Here is the spill cleanup process:

Scene Assessment

When we first arrive on the scene, our trained tech will perform a complete scene assessment. This helps us learn more about the situation and what is required for a spill cleanup. Sometimes, we need to call in more people, equipment, or contractors to help with the spill recovery.

Create a Spill Recovery Plan

Once we have an idea of the spill situation, we can create a detailed spill recovery plan. This plan will give details of the products, equipment and work involved in the job. In addition, the spill recovery plan ensures we are in full compliance with key agencies, including:

  • Washington State Department of Ecology (DEO)
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
  • Washington State Department of Transportation (DOT)
  • And we follow Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.

Following these important guidelines helps us create compliant documentation and reporting for the job.

Containing the Spill

While someone is creating the spill recovery plan, our team is quick to contain the spill at the source. For example, if it is coming from a leaky gas tank, we will try to seal the leak or set up barriers around the leak so it cannot spread.

We’ll use spill containment booms around storm drains, ditches and waterways to keep the spill from spreading. In some cases, we will build up the area around a storm drain with soil or gravel to help keep it clean while we complete the spill recovery.

Securing the Site

Safety is a top priority. If the spill is from a motor vehicle accident, on a roadway and disrupting traffic, we set up lane closures and scene safety lighting during the recovery. In other instances, we might create barriers to keep the public out of the recovery site.

Cleaning up the Spill

We use specialized equipment and tried-and-true spill recovery materials to contain the spill and clean the site thoroughly. Here are some examples of how we work and what we use on an emergency spill response:

  • Absorbents are used to soak up fuel, oil and other spills from roadways and concrete. Then, we can sweep away the material and dispose of it.
  • Vacuum trucks help us remove spills, contaminated water and mud from watery ditches and storm drains.
  • Remove contaminated soil from the spill area using Bobcats and other equipment. In smaller areas, we get out the shovels and elbow grease! The soil is tested in a lab to ensure we went deep enough. Then, new material is placed to restore the site.
  • Debris is removed and loaded into trailers for disposal. We leave the site exactly as we found it, or better.
  • Heavy equipment, such as trailers and our crane-style wreckers, is used to move damaged vehicles, equipment, and cargo from the cleanup site. We also offer cargo recovery services.

Once the spill recovery is complete, the appropriate agency reviews it to ensure that everything is entirely restored.

Spill Cleanup Requires Reporting

We also provide photo documentation and reporting to ensure the spill recovery complies with all state and federal legislation. This documentation is required by law and will protect you from costly fines. It can also protect you against any legal issues that may arise in the future.
